The Expanse

A poem about feeling tiny and infinite at the same time, while actively recognising the value of those feelings. The importance of knowing how small we are, but how big the world could be.

Don’t look up!

You might find yourself

Not in some therapeutic

existential

experiential

way

You simply might

find yourself

here

In this world we share

or should share

and could share

But more than that

You might find yourself

dreaming

wishing

loving

Hoping for a world, a life, a dream

Something bigger

something grander

something more

And what happens then?

Well that’s not for me

for him or her

for them

It’s all for you

for here

for now

And you just might find fear

sadness

pain

For a world of possible

of chance

of maybe

All lost!

But that, my friend,

is by design

If we all somehow

by some wonder

by some miracle

Were able for just once

To find ourselves

here

now

alive

What marvels might we

as one

discover?

And so they

that is to say

the imperial they

In order that we

that is to say

the infinite

the beautiful

the powerful we

Might not find the truth

Demand of us one thing

Above all else.

Whatever you fucking do,

Don’t

Look

Up!
